Bike-a-holics speak out

Ortiz said he had biked 200 miles in two days on his Surly Long Haul Trucker
May is National Bike Month, an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride, whether it’s to get to work or school, to save money or time, to preserve our health and the environment or to explore the world.

More Dropper Posts

A dropper post allows a rider to adjust his seat height on the fly, usually with a handlebar remote. This lets the rider maintain full seat height for climbs and pedal-heavy sections, but instantly drop the seat to lower the center of gravity and create more space for better control on descents and technical sections. Expect to see more of them as more players jump into the market and lighter-weight, XC-friendly droppers trickle out.

Bicycle Commuter Trends in the US- Graphic Representation

A University of Oregon student has released a great graphic depiction of America’s bicycle mode share, government spending on bike/ped infrastructure, and bicycle-related fatalities. Kory Northrop created the map, graphs, and text for an advanced cartography class and it gives a nice visual representation of various bike numbers. Besides being relevant to Eugene because it was created by a UO student, it also helps to show that the more we invest in bicycle infrastructure, the more likely it is that we will actually get our ridership up as well as our fatalities down– an important thing to consider as we move forward with the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan.

Man's stolen trike found in pieces, to be repaired

Story Boise Police say a recumbent tricycle that was stolen from a man with special needs on Sunday will be repaired.
Police found several pieces of the trike Monday at two separate locations.
Due to a brain injury, Brian Gorman says he has a hard time balancing on a regular bike, and this three-wheeled tricycle was his only mode of transportation.  It was stolen from his yard Sunday after being locked to a tree.

MacAvalanche 2012 pt 1:snow,sunburn,29er death wish action.

Who would race the punishing MacAvalanche on a fully rigid 29er? Ace Mad Dog Woodley, that’s who!
Part one, and Mad Dog attempts the seeding race with a frozen rear hub!
Words and photos: MacAce Mad Dog Woodley
I believe Noel Coward penned a song for people like me, “only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun” I decided to race test a 29er, but I don’t have access to the latest gear and bikes so had to wing it a bit.
So on Friday night I get confirmed to race, very early Saturday morning I head off to Glen Coe for the 2nd Mac-Avalanche and we are getting more snow this time. As it turns out I hate riding in snow, last year was like riding through wet marbles, and this year will be my second attempt at riding in snow. I can’t win this event, I am not even a contender, it’s a unique mountain race in the UK and attracts a very broad mix of riders and racers, and No Fuss events try to keep things on the laid back side.

Bicycle Polo surges across Texas

Take a little bit of bike dork, mix it in with a pinch of jock, and what do you get? A “hardcourt” Bicycle Polo player.
Dallas is home to more than 100 of them. Hardcourt Bicycle Polo has reached a new level of popularity in recent years, says Dylan Holt, a veteran of the sport and a founder of the Dallas Bicycle Polo club.

Bike Blast Beckons Bicycle Buffs

The morning drizzle faded away and the wind died down just in time for Santa Clara University’s first-ever Bike Blast event. Based on the university’s six-year tradition of College Night, the April 26 free event was a way for students to get involved with the school’s de Saisset Museum. This year "College Night" opened to the public due to the appeal of the museum’s current bike-related exhibits.
"Bike Blast is an event that [the de Saisset Museum] put together," said Lindsey Kouvaris, Curator of Exhibits and Collections. "It’s based on an event that we do twice a year called College Night, which originated as a way to get students involved and to come have a really fantastic and entertaining time."

To be eligible, a buyer must be an Austin Energy customer and buy from a shop that is also partnered with Austin Energy.

Austin cycling community remembers avid cyclist killed this weekend

55-year old Verter Ginestra, a married salesman and father was riding his bicycle on the shoulder of 360, near the Westbank exit around 2 p.m. Saturday.

A Department of Public Safety spokesperson said that the driver was a man in his mid-eighties, but as of Monday night he had not been charged. It’s believed the elderly driver veered onto the shoulder, hitting and killing Ginestra in the process.

“Everybody loved him because he was just a man's man,” said John Osgerby, a friend of Ginestra’s, who was very active in a cycling club called CyclingTexas.org.  “He was a great athlete, and just a good friend to all of us. Never negative always fun and loved being on the bike with us,” added Osgerby.

Accident numbers show hot spots for bike vs. car crashes in Austin

Numbers obtained by KVUE News from Austin Police show groups of clusters citywide when it comes to bicycle vs. car crashes.
For 2012, there have already been 102 car and bike crashes. Last year, there were 132 during the first four months.

KVUE News looked at crashes for the same time periods, meaning the first four months of this year from 2009 to the present.

The data shows clusters of bike and car crashes on South Lamar between Oltorf and Ben White where there were 14 accidents.

South Congress from Oltorf to Ben White also showed a high concentration of bicycle and car crashes which surprised some cyclists there because there are bike lanes there.

We also saw a high concentration of crashes on Guadalupe near the University of Texas north to 45th Street.

However the highest concentration of bike and car crashes took place in the downtown area with high concentrations on streets like 5th between I-35 and Lamar.

“I've had people really get close to me, push me over with the wind and I've fell off. A couple of friends, same thing,” said Alain Gonzalez, a cyclist who rides everyday on South Lamar near Ben White.
