Austin cycling community remembers avid cyclist killed this weekend

55-year old Verter Ginestra, a married salesman and father was riding his bicycle on the shoulder of 360, near the Westbank exit around 2 p.m. Saturday.

A Department of Public Safety spokesperson said that the driver was a man in his mid-eighties, but as of Monday night he had not been charged. It’s believed the elderly driver veered onto the shoulder, hitting and killing Ginestra in the process.

“Everybody loved him because he was just a man's man,” said John Osgerby, a friend of Ginestra’s, who was very active in a cycling club called CyclingTexas.org.  “He was a great athlete, and just a good friend to all of us. Never negative always fun and loved being on the bike with us,” added Osgerby.
