William Shatner - Does Gun Control Work?

HaHAHAHA!

This is concealed carry in action. That poor thug never saw it coming; then again he is just another stupid criminal preying on a “defenseless” hard working honest citizen. But this time the citizen was armed, and was obviously well acquainted with gun control, meaning the ability to control his gun so as the bullets come out of the barrel well aimed and on the right target, in this case a scumbag out to do no good.

First person to cycle to South Pole

At around midnight UK time last night, the 35-year-old from Wales found herself just 4km from her destination. However, she had to wait for permission to enter the zone around the Pole itself, because a flight was due to depart. Leijerstram, who used a recumbent ‘fat’ bike for her record attempt, tweeted: “So close I can almost touch the SP! Can't believe I have almost made it. My experiment worked!”

As City Cycling Grows, So Does Bike Tax Temptation - ABC News

Hmm, let's spend money on a program that doesn't help local residents or generate sustainable revenue.  Then, tax the same local riders for "bike lane maintenance, etc".  These riders are out trying to prevent global warming while riding in the snow!  Give them a break...

"Early blasts of snow, ice and below-zero temperatures haven't stopped a surprising number of Chicago cyclists from spinning through the slush this winter, thanks in part to a city so serious about accommodating them that it deploys mini-snow plows to clear bike lanes.
The snow-clearing operation is just the latest attention city leaders have lavished on cycling, from a growing web of bike lanes to the nation's second largest shared network of grab-and-go bicycles stationed all over town. But it also spotlights questions that have been raised here, a city wrestling with deep financial problems, and across the country."

"Two or three states consider legislation each year for some type of cycling registration and tax — complete with decals or mini-license plates, National Conference of State Legislatures policy specialist Douglas Shinkle said. This year, it was Georgia, Oregon, Washington and Vermont. The Oregon legislation, which failed, would even have applied to children."

Crash on I-35 kills 44-year-old cyclist

Another driver gets away with killing a cyclist.  "The driver is not being questioned by police, who said speed and alcohol were not a factor. Still, it was very dark during the time of the crash, so police are trying to figure out if the man had any lights on his bicycle."

Armstrong bribed me with $100K hidden in cake box: cyclist

Leave the bike, take the cannoli.
Here’s an all-time tale to add to the ledger of disgraced doper Lance Armstrong: A retired Italian cyclist alleges Armstrong gave him a $100,000 bribe in a cake box to let him win a 1993 race in the United States with a $1 million purse.
“It was a young American colleague,” Roberto Gaggioli told the Corriere della Sera, according to a translation. ”He offered me a panettone [a traditional Italian Christmas cake] as a present and wished me a merry Christmas. In the box there were $100,000 in small bills. That colleague was Lance Armstrong.

Good News! New Bieber Album No One Wants Will Be Available Only Briefly and Digitally

This is a relief. Justin Bieber is releasing his Manic Mondays singles as a digital-only album on iTunes. And it will only be available for a short time. Bieber’s released six or seven singles on consecutive Mondays, all incredibly rushed and terrible sounding. None of them took off on radio, as I reported, or charted beyond their first couple of days of release.
To celebrate this, Bieber will release the singles with five other songs and some other detritus as an “album” on iTunes beginning December 16th until January 2nd. After that all of it will still be on iTunes as singles but not in its marketed package titled– ahem– “Journals Vol. 1.” I know, yikes already.
The other good news is that Bieber says he’s planning on taking an actual vacation soon. And no new album until next fall 2014. The bad news is that he has another insipid promotional film coming out shortly called “Believe.”

Specialized, Mountain Cycle disagree on "Stumptown"

North Portland based Mountain Cycle and global bike giant Specialized Bicycle Components of Morgan Hill, California are locked in a disagreement that neither side is backing down from. At issue is Mountain Cycle's use of, "Stumptown" which has been the model name for their cyclocross bike since 2003.

According to Specialized's legal department, Stumptown is "confusingly similar" to Stumpjumper, a model name Specialized has used since 1981. Specialized is demanding that Mountain Cycle "cease and desist" from using the name immediately and that they remove all current stock and references to the model from their marketing materials.
So far no lawsuit has been filed, but at this point there seems to be no budging from either side.
According to this wikipedia entry the term Stumptown was coined way back in 1847. I also wonder if Specialized is being a bit extra-sensitive because this year is the 25th anniversary of the Stumpjumper.

Epic Wheel Works will change name due to potential trademark conflict with Specialized

Portlander Jude Kirstein, who has spent two years making Epic Wheel Works a successful wheel building business, has decided to change the name of her company after finding out that Specialized Bicycle Components would enforce its trademark rights based on their use of the "Epic" brand.
Kirstein launched her wheel building business in 2009 out of a tiny, 64 square-foot shop in Southeast Portland. Despite a daunting economy and the niche focus of her business, her hard work was starting to pay off. Kirstein recently made her first hire and with a growing customer list, she has long outgrown her tiny space. In a big move for a small business, she plans to move into a new storefront in the coming weeks.

A few months ago, when a lawyer asked if she needed help with anything for her growing business, she politely declined. But the offer stuck in her head because she knew the "Epic" part of her name — which she chose as an homage to a memorable bike ride she took through South America years ago — was also the name of a bicycle sold by Specialized.
"Having to Cease and Desist isn't beneficial for me, it's heart breaking, and will set my business back considerably financially."
— Jude Kirstein, in an email to a lawyer representing Specialized
Kirstein was also well aware that Specialized is vigilant about protecting their trademarks. She remembers when they threatened Portland-based Mountain Cycle with a lawsuit over that company's popular "Stumptown" bike model (they felt it was too close to their "Stumpjumper" brand). She also knew of a small bike bag maker in Alaska formerly known as "Epic Bags" that received a Cease and Desist letter from Specialized. In response, that company decided to change its name to Revelate Designs.

Social media explosion over Specialized's Roubaix lawsuit

COCHRANE, Alberta (BRAIN) — A Canadian retailer says Specialized Bicycle is suing him over his use of the name Roubaix, which Specialized has trademarked in Canada.
Dan Richter, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, has operated Cafe Roubaix Bicycle Studio for several years and also sells a Cafe Roubaix wheel and rim.

"I had assumed I could not register Roubaix as a trade mark as it is a geographical location well known in cycling, not to mention the wide-spread use of the term Roubaix throughout the industry," Richter said in a press release sent out Saturday. "I thought I could freely use Roubaix ... To be informed I cannot use the name is devastating.  I invested my life savings, military severance pay, as well as all my Veteran's Affairs award for my illness into Café Roubaix."
Richter's situation was covered by the Calgary Herald on Saturday and his story went viral, attracting attention on social media and websites across the industry over the weekend.

Lance vs. Macca
Triathlon Star McCormack Challenges Armstrong
Ironman champ proposes an unofficial, man-on-man, multisport showdown—but will Lance take the bait?

AUSTIN, December  4, 2013 (AFP) -
Disgraced US cyclist Lance Armstrong is open to the idea of a one-on-one race showdown with Australian triathlon star Chris McCormack, a two-time World Ironman champion.

McCormack, the 2007 and 2010 World Ironman champion, also captured the 1997 International Triathlon Union world crown and the 2012 ITU Long Distance world title.

Armstrong had hoped to enter the Ironman and triathlon events but his admission of taking performance-enhancing drugs after being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles left him ineligible for any sanctioned events requiring World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) tests.

But in an interview on Triathlete magazine's website, McCormack made public his challenge to face Armstrong in a man-on-man triathlon challenge.

"I said 'I will race you, mate.' I don't even care if there are no accolades. No one around. I just want to race you. Just two old blokes. No excuses,'" McCormack told the magazine.

Tommy Godwin's 'unbreakable' cycling record

In 1939, Tommy Godwin rode 75,065 miles in a single year to set an endurance riding record that some believe will never be beaten.
In fact, he kept on going until 14 May 1940, setting the record for the time taken to ride 100,000 miles.
Born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1912, Godwin would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. But unfortunately, Godwin's record is now largely forgotten.
The Year Record has fallen out of fashion and is no longer the coveted cycling achievement it used to be.
Imagine spending every day in the saddle for 18 hours, covering over 200 miles, repairing any mechanical failures, picking yourself up after crashes and then riding even further the next day to make up lost time.

Police: Attack of Cyclist Was Not Part of "Knockout Game"

No it's called "lets beat the crap out of someone" game...

Police say the beating of a cyclist along a Philadelphia street was not part of the nationwide "knockout game" trend as they initially believed.
The male victim was riding his bike along 13th and Catherine Streets in the Bella Vista section of the city just before 8 p.m. on Friday when he was randomly punched by a group of teens, police said.
"One guy and two of his friends came to shake me off my bike and started hitting me while I was down," said the victim, who did not want to be identified.
After being hit, the cyclist says he asked the group -- made up of five teen boys and three teen girls -- why they hit him. Without answering, the group then continued beating the man.

Despite Financial Concerns, Cities Are Doubling Down on Bike-Share

Ride your own damn bike and spend the money on infrastructure!  Everybody I know who supports this shit has 5 bikes.  In Austin the visiting tourist can rent a bike anywhere.

Despite Financial Concerns, Cities Are Doubling Down on Bike-Share
Ongoing financial problems at PBSC (also known as Bixi), the Montréal-based bike-share equipment company, continue to ripple across North America. But even so, the continuing popularity of bike-share with the public is leading cities with PBSC contracts to call for expansion of their systems.
The hope among supporters in places including Toronto and New York is that with revised business models, bike-share can solidify its position as an integral element of the urban transportation menu.
According to the most recent public figures, PBSC, which is owned by the city of Montréal, is $42 million in debt, with a $6.5 million deficit and $5 million in outstanding payments. In September, the auditor general of Montréal expressed doubts over the company’s ability to continue operations. Last month, client Nice Ride Minnesota filed a notice of material breach of contract over long-standing disputes about software development, although at the time, Nice Ride officials emphasized that they hope to resolve the issues and that “Nice Ride values its relationship with PBSC and is optimistic that PBSC will restructure successfully.” In Vancouver, meanwhile, worries about PBSC’s financial stability might shut down the rollout of that city’s program altogether.

Armstrong's urge to tell all is 'a little late'

What makes anybody believe that Lance Armstrong is capable is telling anybody the truth?

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Lance Armstrong's promise to come clean about doping is "a little late", the head of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said on Thursday, accusing the disgraced cyclist of trying to use events to "gain advantage".
Travis Tygart said Armstrong had been pushed into saying he would co-operate with a new inquiry into doping in cycling because of legal proceedings in the U.S.
"He is going for a deposition in the United States in November where he is going to go under oath in a lawsuit and have to answer questions and I think that he is now being forced essentially through that process (to come clean) and that he is trying to gain an advantage," Tygart told Reuters.
"It's a little late but we are still hopeful he will come and answer everything we have to ask him under oath but until he decides to do that, it is entirely premature to determine or speculate on any sort of reduction (of his life ban)."

I remember Pat Tillman

Pat Tillman
This comes from the Pat Tillman Foundation...

Almost ten years later, most Americans still remember Pat as the NFL athlete and soldier, but he is and will always be Tillman Military Scholar #1 in our community.

Arizona State University recognized Pat’s potential, both in the classroom and on the field, with a scholarship to play for the Arizona State Sun Devils. He earned first team Academic All-American honors and the NCAA's Post-Graduate Scholarship for academic and athletic excellence – not to mention the admiration and high regard of his professors, coaches and fans alike. Between games, Pat earned a B.S. in Marketing, graduating Summa Cum Laude from ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business in three-and-a-half years.

Pat’s NFL success neither went to his head nor broke his principles. He drove to games in the same beat-up truck he had in college. He had no cell phone. Instead, he chose to read voraciously and develop, debate and discuss his ideas with eager listeners, family and friends. He was a lifelong learner. He made other's passions his passions. In the off-season, he challenged himself physically with marathons and half-ironman triathlons, while pursuing a master’s degree in history from his alma mater. And he took an active role in the community volunteering with Boys Hope Girls Hope and the March of Dimes, as well as visiting students in schools across the Phoenix Valley to read and discuss books.

After September 11th happened, the rest is history. But Pat's early legacy of service, learning and action lives on in each of our Tillman Military Scholars. In his name, we're grateful for your continued support and dedication to help each of them make an impact for our country and communities in the years to come.

Doping Birds! Belgian Racing Pigeons Fly High on Coke and Painkillers

Slippery slope....  Let me guess, "Everybody was doing it" but I blame the trainers.

Nothing is sacred it appears in the high-flying world of pigeon racing in Belgium, where six birds were found to have been doped with drugs such as cocaine and painkillers, Belgian media reported Thursday.

Cycling-mad Belgium is used to hearing of sports stars pumped up on performance-enhancing drugs, but officials are now homing-in on the birds used in a sport which rakes in millions in breeding and prize monies.

The Belgian pigeon-racing federation sent samples from 20 birds to the National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa after a recent exchange visit, two Flemish dailies reported.

Although tests on the same birds in Belgium had not revealed a problem, the South African lab did.

56-year-old James Kelly was hit and killed by a driver on Overland Road.

On Wednesday night, for a second time in two weeks, the cycling community came to honor a cyclist killed on his bike, in a Ride of Silence.

Dozens of cyclist made the half-mile ride from Overland Road to Kelly's ghost bike.

It's chained up on Federal Way, close to where he was hit.

Organizers say they learned about his death, while taking part in a Twilight ride for another cyclist last week.

Ben Foster Playing Lance Armstrong Alongside Chris O'Dowd In Cycling Biopic

I disagree with this choice!!  Ben is not douchey enough.

The remarkable story of the rise and fall of cyclist Lance Armstrong will be translated in a new feature-length biopic directed by Stephen Frears. The glory of Armstrong's triumph over testicular cancer and subsequent Tour de France wins in the 90s has been overshadowed by the shame that accompanied him being stripped of all seven of his consecutive titles last year due to doping evidence.

The movie will chart Armstrong's rise and fall as a sportsman as well as the vociferous work of journalist David Walsh to expose doping within the sport.

Latina bicyclists answer macho bike culture with their own chain gang

I can't fit my extra tube, tools, patch kit, wallet and kuzi in my new man purse.  Screw it, I think I will stay macho.

Psycho Brigade

Growing up, Evelyn Martinez's mother didn't want her to ride a bike.
"She thinks it's not safe for women to be riding late at night, and cars are dangerous too," Martinez said.
Moreover, her mother told her: "Bicycles are for men."
But after a chance meeting last year, Martinez joined an all-female, predominantly Latino cycling group that is both an answer and a challenge to the aggressive male biking culture. Like men's bike crews, it defies L.A.'s monolithic car culture with an in-your-face ethic, reflected in its name: the Ovarian Psyco Cycles Brigade.

Bradley Wiggins targets world time trial title and helping Chris Froome

After Bradley Wiggins' annus mirabilis of 2012 he made it clear that, with the Tour de France won along with the Olympic time trial, the rest of his career would be about filling in the gaps. One yawning hole in his palmarès is the lack of a road world champion's rainbow jersey – he has six to his name in track
competition – and in Wednesday's time trial over 56.8 kilometres between Montecatini Terme and Florence, he will have one of his best chances to tick that particular box.

'Greatest fraud' in sports history: Feds urge judge to allow Lance Armstrong case to proceed

AUSTIN -- Justice Department lawyers urged a federal judge not to dismiss the government's fraud lawsuit against Lance Armstrong, arguing the U.S. Postal Service was tainted by its sponsorship of his team while he used performance-enhancing drugs to win the Tour de France.
The Postal Service, which insists it didn't know about a team drug regimen that was exposed last year by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, is permanently linked to what the government lawyers called "the greatest fraud in the history of professional sports" in court records filed Monday night.
Former Armstrong teammate Floyd Landis' first sued Armstrong in 2010 under the False Claims Act, which allows whistle-blowers to get a share of any money recovered based on their disclosures. The Justice Department joined the lawsuit in February, announcing it would seek at least the $40 million the Postal Service paid to Armstrong's team and additional damages that could push closer to $120 million.

Bike Waiter, at your service - San Antonio Express-News

Things start getting crazy in the offices of Bike Waiter even before the lunch hour, with the business handling a barrage of orders from customers for restaurant meals.
On weekends, the Bike Waiter's website and phones can stay busy even after midnight, when the company fields orders from downtown dwellers and convention-goers.
The Bike Waiter LLC, launched in September 2011, is a twist on the business of delivering meals to customers.
Instead of deliveries coming from a single restaurant, Bike Waiter lets clients order from about 35 restaurants, many of them downtown, said owners Shane Broussard, 38, and Heather Monroe, 37.
“We are a marketing company first,” Broussard said. He tells restaurant owners: “If we sell your food, we keep a percentage and send you the rest.”
Rather than delivering by car, which most restaurants do, the couple has focused on bike deliveries within 3 miles of the restaurant at which the order's placed.

Jacob Landis's MLB charity ride ends in hit-and-run accident

This is not how Jacob Landis’ cross-country adventure was supposed to end: with a concussion, a broken cheekbone, a broken nose, a chipped tooth and a ride to the ballpark in a truck.
He was supposed to pedal triumphantly into Marlins Park on Tuesday night, kind of like the leader of the Tour de France entering Paris. Only Landis didn’t ride more than 10,000 miles to earn a yellow jersey and a few million dollars.

He did it to raise money for hearing impaired kids. Landis had successfully pedaled to 29 Major League ballparks. Then Saturday night on a dark Florida highway, about 90 miles from No. 30, he ran into a tractor-trailer.
More precisely, the rearview mirror of a passing semi hit Landis and kept on going.

Lance Armstrong documentary premieres - More Sports - SI.com

VENICE, Italy (AP) -- Director Alex Gibley started filming Lance Armstrong before the cyclist acknowledged doping, and looking back now at the 2009 footage he realizes "there was a lot of material there where he was just lying to me straight out.''
Gibley was in Venice on Tuesday for the premiere of his film "The Armstrong Lie,'' in which he salvaged the 2009 footage meant for a comeback movie and added interviews with Armstrong after the stunning disclosure.
Gibley said that Armstrong "to some extent, is always a curator of his own myth and his own story'' and once he realized that people no longer idolize him the same way "I think he wanted to spin it.''
Still, Gibley maintains that Armstrong "was more honest'' in the later interviews.

One victim told Champion he’s always on guard, but was not expecting what he got when he turned one corner.
“It’s a little surreal,” said Keith Cho, who had one eye swollen shut. “It was very traumatic. I’ve never been jumped before.”
A rope mark burned into his neck detailed the reason behind Cho’s newfound sense of insecurity.
“I’ve lived in this area for 35 years and for the first time in my life I feel unsafe to come to this city,” Cho said.

The Cult in Austin Tx 2013

This post is only bike related in the sense that my buddy (who bought my ticket) is the only guy I know who has been pulled over by the COPS on a bicycle. He was not even peeing at the time.
