Pedicabs in a single generation have gone from minor curiosity to major presence in downtown Austin, with 24 operating companies, 341 permitted cabs and 955 city-authorized operators.
With that in mind, the Austin City Council on Thursday will consider a new ordinance that would protect the safety — and the pocketbooks — of pedicab users. Much of the ordinance already appears in city policies and procedures where the stipulations carry somewhat less force. But there are some new requirements as well.
