Pittsylvania County native to cycle across country

A Pittsylvania County native will bicycle more than 3,000 miles across the country next month.
John Powers will set out from Wilmington, N.C., on May 1 and head to San Francisco to raise money and awareness for HIV/AIDS. He expects the trip to take about a month and average about 100 miles a day.
“I think it’s a good cause that is worthy of it [the trip],” Powers, 27, said during an interview at his parents’ home on Snakepath Road on Friday.
After his cross country trek, Powers will meet up with other bicyclists June 3 for a seven-day, 545-mile bike ride — known as AIDS/LifeCycle — from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
