Charles McDonald, one-armed cyclist, rides to stay alive

Charles McDonald
When I’m off the bike, then I’m this guy with the one arm. But when I’m on the bike, I’m just another rider.”

It took several years and many bike modifications to get to the skill level he is today. In his first race, he fell every 25 feet.

“Failure isn’t too disheartening for me – I’m used to it. When it happens, I just get up and do it again,” he said.

“I guess I’m not afraid to fail.”

McDonald, who rides for Team CNC out of Newport, competes in three disciplines: mountain biking, road and cyclocross. He’s generally the only competitor with a visible disability.
